McAfee make a great antivirus product and splash sceens are fine for freeware or shareware. However when you've paid for an application, do you really need to be constantly reminded that it is installed on your system?

These instructions show how to stop the McAfee Anti-Virus 8.5i splash screen appearing every time Windows starts.

WARNING: It is a good policy to backup files before editing the registry. If the Registry Editor is used incorrectly, it can cause serious problems that may require a reinstallation of the operating system. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
  • You may need to first temporarily disable McAfee from blocking changes to McAfee settings.
  • To do this, open the McAfee VirusScan Console (screenshot), then right-click on Access Protection and select Properties (screenshot)
  • Select Common Standard Protection from the list on the left and untick Block for Prevent Modification of McAfee Files and Settings. (screenshot). Click Apply.
  • Click on the START menu, select the Run box and type regedit (screenshot)
  • Navigate down to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\McAfee\DesktopProtection.
  • Right click bSkipSplash and select Modify (screenshot).
  • A "DWORD Editor" window will appear. To skip the splash screen set the value to 1 by entering 1 then clicking OK. Close the Registry Editor.
Finally re-check the block setting for "Prevent Modification of McAfee Files and Settings" in the VirusScan console.
